Winning The War On Workplace Conflict

March 01, 20151 min read

Conflict in the workplace is a fact of life. Our goal should not be to try and remove it altogether, but to manage it. As long as it is managed effectively, it can lead to personal, professional and practice growth.

The benefits of resolving conflict successfully:

  • Increased Understanding: Discussion expands awareness.
  • Increased Unity: Stronger mutual respect abounds.
  • Increased Awareness: Conflict pushes you to examine your goals closely.

Understanding Conflict Styles (Thomas-Kilmann Model):

  • Competitive: Taking a firm stand, knowing what you want.
  • Collaborative: Meeting the needs of all people involved.
  • Compromising: Finding a solution that partially satisfies everyone.
  • Accommodating: Willingness to meet the needs of others at your own expense.
  • Avoiding: Seeking to evade the conflict entirely.

Keys to Effective Conflict Resolution:

1. Use Your Logical Brain: Focus on the issue rather than the person.

2. Always Seek A Win Win: Brainstorm solutions that allow everyone to move forward.

3. Call In Switzerland: Call in a neutral party if necessary.
