Hi, this is Grant Herbert, leadership and sustainable performance coach, and today I want to continue our conversation around emotional intelligence by helping you navigate your emotions for leadership excellence.
As leaders, you need to understand that emotions are not separate from your professional life. They are an integral part of how you think, decide, and relate to others.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise what emotions you are experiencing and use that information to guide your behaviour in a healthy and productive way.
There are three key strategies I want to give you today.
The first strategy is to name the emotion. When you experience a strong emotion, take a moment to identify it. Is it frustration, anxiety, excitement? Naming the emotion reduces its intensity and gives you more control over how you respond.
The second strategy is to pause before responding. When you feel a strong emotion in a leadership situation, take a breath before reacting. This pause creates space for you to choose your response rather than simply react.
The third strategy is to seek to understand. Use your social awareness to consider what the other person might be experiencing. Empathy is a powerful leadership tool.
By navigating your emotions with these three strategies, you will become a more effective and respected leader. I'll see you then.
